Moments of Victory, Moments of Change

Stories of Perseverance and Quiet Courage

Moments of Victory, Moments of Change is a collection of life stories, a glimpse into the minds and hearts of individuals and families who face adversity with faith and determination. While every story is different, threads of hope and courage are woven through each, connecting them and forming a common bond.

The intent is to honor the tenacity of the people who willingly share their stories and to express appreciation for the communities of love and support that surround them. Victor Hugo once said, “Man’s greatest actions are performed in minor struggles. Life, misfortune, isolation, abandonment, and poverty are battlefields which have their heroes—obscure heroes who are at times greater than illustrious heroes.” The life stories in Moments of Victory, Moments of Change are not about obscure heroes, but about average, everyday individuals for whom major problems are challenges not deterrents.

The parents of Marge, who is now in her 70s and retired from the educational system, were told that their daughter would be mentally retarded and would never walk–if she lived. The family proved the doctors wrong!

Tom’s doctor told his parents to leave him at the hospital and forget about him. Until his death in 2018, Tom advocated for people with disabilities, touching lives on at least four continents.

Harold, too, proved that one cannot predict how long a person might live, nor can the impact of their life be measured. He passed away just shy of his 91st birthday, possibly the longest living American with Spina Bifida.

The stories of the people profiled above, and those of others in the book, are uplifting and sometimes heart wrenching. In all cases, courage, unity, and perseverance emerge as key family traits.
